Now that winter has arrived, please don’t forget about the investment in your backyard. Let’s begin with your pool cover. If you have a stretch solid cover, try to keep most of the water and debris to a minimum. The water bag style solid cover is similar; however, if your cover continues to contain water even in dry times, that is an indication the cover has holes in it. If this happens, contact your pool professional as soon as possible.

With a mesh cover, you can keep off debris. If you see water coming up through the cover, you should lower the pool level so you don’t see water coming through the cover, but never drain it completely. Please remember that any type of cover has a life span. If a pool professional recommends replacement, it is not for the sale. Rather, it is for safety and protection of your pool.

Now about the heart of your pool- the filtration system. Your equipment should be on a solid non-combustible slab. Normally you should keep your system 3-4 inches above the ground to keep debris away from mechanical parts of the system. If you are thinking about any repairs or upgrades, now is the time for two reasons. Your pool professional should still be quoting last year’s prices. Most importantly, you won’t have any delays or problems when you open the pool in the spring.

As pool season approaches, Dietrich Pool Service wants to help make sure your summer is not only enjoyable, but also safe for everyone.

Before diving in, it’s important to review some essential safety measures to protect your loved ones.

Let’s begin with one of the most crucial aspects: your fence and gates. Your pool fence should act as a solid barrier- chain link or another secure style that a child cannot easily get through. The gate must be self-closing and self-latching. According to code, it should close properly at the 2” opening mark, which is roughly the width of three fingers. Additionally, the latch or lock must be placed out of a child’s reach to prevent accidental entry.

Now that you’ve opened the pool, make sure your main drain covers are in place and secure. All manufacturers of main drain covers are required to include an expiration date. Typically, they should be replaced every 5 to 7 years, depending on the manufacturer (Virginia Graeme Baker Act, 2007). A certified diver can replace them without draining the pool.

Since we know you keep your pool chemically balanced and properly filtered, we won’t go into those details.

          Let’s talk about pool parties!

If you’re hosting a gathering, we recommend a few safety measures to ensure everyone has a good time. First, designate someone to watch the little ones while they swim.

Keep a small first aid kit nearby for any minor injuries, just in case. Additionally, we highly recommend that all pool owners take a CPR/First Aid class. These classes typically take about 8 hours at your local YMCA, hospital, or rescue squad.

Those 8 hours could truly be life-saving.

We hope these suggestions help you have a safe and enjoyable season. Remember, we’re always just a phone call away. From all of us at Dietrich Pool Service, we wish you a fun-filled and safe summer by the pool!

How the Sun Works its Magic

As the days heat up, your pool might look like it's shrinking. No- it’s not a trick. It’s just the sun working its magic through evaporation.

All pools lose some water to evaporation. It’s totally normal. Depending on where you live and how warm your pool gets, you could be losing up to 5/8” of water a day. That’s more than you’d think, especially if you're lounging poolside, wondering why the water line looks a little low.

But wait- there’s more to the story.

Pools with waterfalls, fountains, or other splashy features? They look amazing, but they’re also major water evaporators. Anytime water is tossed into the air, it speeds up the evaporation process.

Now here’s something many pool owners don’t realize: while water disappears into thin air, some chemicals don’t. Salt and stabilizer, for example, stay behind. So, if you're refilling your pool more than twice a week and constantly adding chemicals like those, you might be dealing with more than just evaporation- you could have a leak on your hands.

If something feels off, don’t guess. Give your pool pro a call.

As always, the team at Dietrich Pool Service is here to keep things running smoothly, so you can focus on what really matters: sunshine, cannonballs, and summer fun.

          Why Closing Early Pays Off

When it comes to pool maintenance, timing is everything- and the early bird truly gets the clean pool. Closing your pool before the leaves start falling and temperatures drop helps protect your investment and saves you money in the long run.

By scheduling your pool closing early, you avoid clogged filters, algae growth and clogged pipes caused by unexpected freezes. It’s not just about shutting down- it’s about keeping everything running smoothly for next season.

Don’t wait until the weather turns or our schedule fills up. Booking early means your pool gets the care and attention it needs, right when it needs it. Closings will be scheduled on a first come, first served basis- so grab your spot now and enjoy peace of mind all winter long!

          Top Money-Saving Equipment Upgrades

2026 is here and we’d like to suggest a few money-saving upgrades for your pool.

One of the biggest ways to cut costs is by switching from a single-speed pump to a variable-speed pump. When programmed correctly by a technician, a variable-speed pump can reduce your pool’s electricity use by more than 50%—which typically means hundreds of dollars back in your pocket each year.

Another smart upgrade is an ozone system. Ozone works continuously to destroy bacteria and chloramines, which you’d normally control through super-chlorination, algaecides and other chemicals. Whether you use chlorine tablets or a salt system, ozone can reduce your chlorine demand by up to 50%.

The last upgrade to consider is a salt chlorination system. This system uses the salt already in your pool to generate chlorine. As the chlorine breaks down, it returns to salt, allowing the system to recycle it. Because it produces chlorine whenever the pump is running, your chlorine levels remain steady and consistent.

As always, we’re here to provide professional guidance and are happy to offer a free evaluation of your pool and equipment. Our goal is for you to enjoy your pool—not to sell you products—so our recommendations are always made with your best interest in mind.

Make the most of the season by following these simple guidelines

The new season is a great reason to make and keep resolutions. Whether it’s eating right or cleaning out the garage, here are some tips for making and keeping resolutions.

    Make a list

Lists are great ways to stay on track. Write down some big things you want to accomplish and some smaller things, too.

    Check the list regularly

Don’t forget to check in and see how you’re doing. Just because you don’t achieve the big goals right away doesn’t mean you’re not making progress.

    Reward yourself

When you succeed in achieving a goal, be it a big one or a small one, make sure to pat yourself on the back.

    Think positively

Positive thinking is a major factor in success. So instead of mulling over things that didn’t go quite right, remind yourself of things that did.
